Director Dennis Hauk’s explosive debut serves as equal parts contemporary noir, L.A. love letter and cinematography school. Comprised of five single-shot scenes (each the length of a roll of 35mm film), TOO LATE follows the path of Sampson (John Hawkes, terrific here), a hard boiled, hard-luck private investigator intent on unweaving a web of deceit, corruption and murder spanning the City of Angels. With its lead character dropped into one tight situation after another, each scene in this tightly crafted jigsaw puzzle is a joy to experience, underpinned by Hauck’s razor-sharp script and a brilliant cast that includes Dichen Lachman and seasoned vets Robert Forster and Jeff Fahey.
