Before receiving the Queer Palm earlier this year at Cannes for their latest film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and the cultural splash of “I Saw the TV Glow,” writer and director Jane Schoenborn emerged onto the scene with their seemingly innocuous debut feature, “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair.” The film traces the slow dip into paranoia a young girl (Anna Cobb) experiences during her participation in the “World’s Fair Challenge,” a viral online horror trend reminiscent of Bloody Mary or Charlie Charlie. What could've been a gauche PSA in internet safety in the vein of “Megan is Missing” instead becomes an oddly cozy and nostalgic film teeming with love for creepypastas, alternate reality games, and simple bedroom vlogs shot on webcams. This is in no small part due to the research conducted by Schoenbrun for their found footage documentary, “A Self-Induced Hallucination,” which pieced together the Slenderman phenomenon through YouTube uploads, and their eagerness to feature the online creators who helped shape this culture. “We’re All Going to the World's Fair” is an affectionately packed time capsule dedicated to a bygone era of internet horror, while also being a landmark film that set the tone for an emerging movement of independent trans cinema.-Orla MeyerHorrorPT1H26M2026-08-24USen
