Sleeping Giant Fest is sitting out 2021 (will be back in 2022, damnit!)  BUT there is one program we were planning on that we must present as the circumstances surrounding it are just too perfect. Musicians Jeremiah Johnson and John Touchton (Jax natives) have spent the last year sequestered on opposite coasts sending compositions back and forth, building a stunning new soundtrack for Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It is our great pleasure to announce that on March 19th at 7p.m. we are opening our doors (in a limited capacity, on the 100 year anniversary of its US theatrical release) to give you a chance to absorb this  new and devastatingly beautiful approach to the story of our favorite murdering sleepwalker and his devious master, Dr. Caligari.

In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. This authoritative edition of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 4K restoration scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive
